Vitamin K2 as Menaquinone

Vitamin K2 in the form of Menaquinone-7 (MK-7) is only found naturally in large amounts in natto, a fermented product. Early observational clinicals linked this natural natto K2 to both bone and cardiovascular health.

1. In 2001, an observational clinical demonstrated a link between dietary K2 intake and health. Details published in Nutrition detail a Japanese fermented soybean food (natto) as a major determinant of a large geographic difference in circulating levels of vitamin K2 as menquinone-7 (MK-7). Kaneki and colleagues showed increased consumption of vitamin K2 lead to more activated osteocalcin, a K-dependent protein linked to increased bone formation and bone mineral density (BMD), and therefore a lower risk of hip fracture.


2. At the same time, the population-based Rotterdam study evaluated 4,807 health men and women over age 55 to examine the relationship between dietary intake of vitamin K and aortic calcification and heart disease. Findings indicated eating foods rich in natural vitamin K2 reduced the risk of both arterial calcification and negative cardiovascular events with no undesirable side effects.
